Redditor Spots Imposter Website for Trezor Bitcoin Wallet

The Reddit user said that a URL typo would indeed redirect the user to the Trezor scam site while possibly installing compromised firmware.

A Redditor has apparently spotted an imposter website for Bitcoin hardware wallet Trezor.

On Oct. 4, Reddit user castorfromtheva posted about the website, stating that they conducted a test to confirm that it was not genuine. They said:

“Imposter site trying to steal your Bitcoin”

“I just made a little ‘typo’ test and entered ‘tezordotio’ where I obviously left out the ‘r’. I was instantly redirected to a site called which is not the original trezor site.”

Bitcoin engineer and self-proclaimed BTC maximalist Jameson Lopp took to Twitter to warn about the fake website. Lopp – who is also CTO at Bitcoin key security system firm Casa – wrote:

“SECURITY NOTICE Users of @Trezor’s web wallet should NOT visit it by typing ‘http://trezor.io’ into your browser – if you mis-type the URL you may be redirected to an imposter site that will try to steal your BTC! Bookmarks are your friend!”

Malicious app imitates hardware wallet Trezor

Cointelegraph reported on May 23 that scammers had been adding fake cryptocurrency wallets to the Google Play store. The malicious app imitated the Trezor hardware wallet. While looking completely legitimate on Google Play, the software itself contained no Trezor branding at all, with a generic login screen phishing for credentials.

In November 2018, Trezor warned its users after fraudsters began to make counterfeit versions of its hardware wallets. Company officials acknowledged at the time that “Trezor clones have been released over the years”, but a “fake Trezor device, manufactured by a different, unknown vendor” was a startling discovery.

Huobi Wallet to Support MakerDAO Tokens, Decentralized Applications

Major cryptocurrency exchange Huobi has added support for MakerDAO tokens and decentralized apps (DApps) in its wallet.

Huobi Group shared the announcement with Cointelegraph on Aug. 19. MakerDAO has a stablecoin called Dai, a token named MKR, and applications including CPD Portal. The Maker project is a combination of its stablecoin, collateral loans and community governance.

MakerDAO is a type of decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), which is an organization that is managed solely by smart contracts and code, not human managers. A DAO is also operated by users via a consensus voting mechanism, which can be used to make changes in its management. Another DAO, dOrg LLC, purportedly became the first DAO to obtain legal status back in June.

Huobi Group is also adding wallet support for an autonomous protocol for finance DApps called Compound. The Huobi Wallet will support both its tokens and its DApp, which is designed for crypto lending. Huobi Global CEO Livio Weng commented on Huobi’s new wallet inclusions, remarking:

“We think blockchain technology has great potential not just for cryptocurrency but also in providing better overall financial services and products to the public … Both Compound and MakerDAO share our vision and we’re happy to add support for them.”

Retail inroads for MakerDAO

As previously reported by Cointelegraph, a London-based banking alternative called Monolith has partnered with MakerDAO. Monolith provides a Visa debit card, which now supports MakerDAO’s crypto, allowing users to pay for goods in Dai. In addition, the card could be used to make bill payments, as well as send and receive money via Dai.

MakerDAO CEO Rune Christensen discussed how this partnership lets Dai holders use their assets for retail, saying:

“Monolith’s solution provides a powerful way for token holders to extend the usefulness of their crypto-holdings. … Their cards create a critical bridge from the world of DeFi to the more traditional world of retail.”
