Russian Post will implement blockchain to reduce the number of lost packages

Russian Post intends to track the shipment of goods using the  blockchain . Write about this   «Vedomosti» with reference to the representative of the state company. The post is reportedly considering blockchain integration in 2023-2025.

“We are working to develop services and improve the transparency and efficiency of our logistics processes. We are considering different options, the use of blockchain technology is one of them. The first pilot projects can take place no earlier than the III-IV quarters of 2023 » – said the representative of the «Post of Russia».

However, the new technology is unlikely to be available for the average client.

According to Vladimir Urbansky, director of digital products at Russian Post, the new technology is intended primarily for the market:

  • Russian Post wants to move to blockchain.
  • Testing is scheduled for 2023-2025.
  • The financial side of the experiment remains undisclosed.

«Since the Russian Post is a member of the logistics chain, it can provide companies outside with services for tracking supply chains – not only where we act as a logistics operator, but in general the end-to-end chain.»

The blockchain is expected to reduce the number of lost packages. How much Russian Post plans to spend on the new project remains unknown. At the same time, Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media Maksut Shadayev does not share the enthusiasm for digitalization . According to him, in the market «the technological advantages of tracking parcels based on blockchain are not yet obvious.»

For domestic companies, blockchain is not something unbridled. For example, earlier VTB Bank, in cooperation with Severstal,  tried to  optimize industry-wide interaction through the blockchain. As part of the testing, product suppliers received invoice payment information via a distributed network.
